SUL2SPU.DOC this doc file
SPSLIDEX.PRG Spectrum 512 slide show utility (use this to view pics)
RAYTRACE.TXT text file by Nick Smith (included with permission)
contains important info for any GFA Raytrace user
Introduction
------------
This program will convert GFA Raytrace files into Spectrum 512 files.
GFA Raytrace uses it's own file format which until recently was a
complete mystery. GFA Raytrace is capable of generating some very
stunning raytraced images, but due to it's file incompatabilities the
output was all but useless in my mind. GFA does not include any printer
or file conversion utilities with GFA Raytrace. Well, the only way to use
your newly created images was to wait for someone to come along and write
a conversion utility. I was waiting myself! Well, if you are one of
those people waiting for such a program then your wait is over, as you
have probably discovered perphaps the only GFA Raytrace picture converter.
Now let's get serious for a while. The first point I want to make
is this. Just because I have released a conversion utility of this nature
doesn't mean you should give up on GFA Raytrace being updated. I urge
you to write GFA and ask them to update the program. Tell them what you
want to have added and/or fixed before it's too late. GFA seems to be
ignoring the program and the people who purchased it. One particular
person who I will mention is Nick Smith, he has been trying to get the
needed documentation for this type of conversion utility for some time.
Without Nick Smith you wouldn't be reading this docs file, he was the
one who urged me to finish the program. As it turns out I managed
to figure out the file format without the help of GFA, so they might
as well release the specs now as it is no secret anymore.
Included in the package is a text file written by Nick Smith. This
is the same text file that prompted me to contact Nick and I urge all
GFA Raytrace users to read it.
This documentation will focus primarily on the operation of this
program; it's not intended to teach you how to create and/or read the
picture file formats used by the program.
This program is ShareWare!
--------------------------
Now, before you get to excited I must first tell you that my
ShareWare adventures have be less then what I expected. That's not to
say I havn't gotten any replies, I have, but I think the numbers should
be a little higher than they are. In an attempt to over come the
problem I decided to try an approach used by other ShareWare authors.
The program you are about to use is somewhat less than perfect. That's
not to say it doesn't work as advertised, in fact it does work as
advertised but with one small catch. The Spectrum 512 pictures it
outputs are not easily touched up in Spectrum 512, but look ok when
viewed from a slide show. If you want to output Spectrum pics which are
fully compatible with Spectrum 512 then you'll have to register the
program. After registering, a full working version will be sent to
you. I didn't want to do it this way, but I think it's for the best.
If by some chance you are given or download a registered version of
RayVerter (not registered to you) please forward it me stating the source
of the copy or destroy it yourself! Thanks.
All versions of this program are 'ShareWare', this means that if
you decide to use it you're expected to pay for it. You pay for the
commercial programs use, right? Why not pay for the ShareWare you
use as well? Rememeber, ShareWare doesn't happen by accident. The
author spent time writing the software and relies on your honesty
as an Atari Computer owner.
The registration fee is $5.00 ... or send what you think it's worth.
If you do decide to use it, please send a check or money order
in U.S. funds to...

I thank you for your support! Please remember, if you want to see
more ShareWare programs like this, you have to do your part and pay for
the ShareWware programs you use.
Using the program
-----------------
Runs in low or medium resolution only.
Reads GFA Raytrace 'SUL' uncompressed files only.
You must first uncompress the file you wish to convert. To do this
you need to load GFA Raytrace and turn off the 'Compression' feature
under the 'Status' option from the editor. Load the picture and
then resave it and it will be uncompressed.
Writes Spectrum 512 'SPU' uncompressed files only.
To use the program either:
1) Install the program as an application on the GEM Desktop with a file
type of 'SUL' and then save the Desktop information. Double-click
on the GFA Raytrace 'SUL' file you wish to convert. The 'SUL' file
you clicked on will then be loaded and converted. The 'SPU' file will
always be written to the same directory as the source file.
Example: Input> D:\PICS\ROOM3D.SUL
Output> D:\PICS\ROOM3D.SPU
After saving the 'SPU' file you will be return to the GEM Desktop.
2) Double-click on the program from the GEM Desktop. The file selector
will appear so you can select the GFA Raytrace 'SUL' file you wish to
convert. The 'SUL' file you selected will be loaded and converted.
When it's done it will be displayed in Spectrum 512 mode. Press
any key when you are done viewing the picture. An alert box will
appear asking you if you want to save the 'SPU' file. You have three
options:
1) Write the 'SPU' file to the default directory.
2) Use the file selector to save the 'SPU' file to a specific
directory.
3) Abort the save.
Once you've made your slection the program will save the 'SPU' file
and cycle back to the beginning so you can convert another 'SUL'
file. Selecting 'Cancel' in the file selector when prompted for a
'SUL' file exits the program and returns you to the GEM Desktop.
These option are valid no matter how you execute the program.
The 'SUL' file you selected will be loaded and displayed. This program
converts the 'SUL' file in one pass. You can peek in on it's progress at
anytime by pressing the space bar which causes the program to display the
picture in Spectrum 512 mode. Leaving the 512 color mode on slows done
the conversion! Pressing the space bar again shuts off the 512 color
mode. Pressing escape aborts the conversion without saving. After the
picture is completed a bell will ring. Due to the differences in the
file formats it's possible the output picture won't look exactly like the
input file. RayVerter attempts to retain as much of the original picture
as possible, infact most pictures are pixel for pixel copies while others
are slightly averaged.
NOTE: If an error is detected all open files will be closed, and you will
be alerted and return to the GEM Desktop.
About the program
-----------------
This program was written with GFA Basic 3.6TTe on a stock Mega ST2
with TOS 1.4 and a SC1224 color monitor. I can't say for sure if it
will run on lesser or newer machines, but it should as long as the
machine you run it on supports Spectrum 512. Since I wrote the program
without any docs on the GFA Raytrace file format it's possible I over
looked something important. If anyone has any scrap of info on the
file format I would like to see it. Future version might read compressed
GFA Raytrace files and perphaps write GIF files or other formats that
can better retain all the colors. Please contact me if you have an docs
on GIF, GFA Raytrace, or Spectrum you would like to send my way.
User Support
------------
If you have an idea for a feature or want to report a bug (if any)
then by all means contact me. Please include the full name and
version# of the program you are refering to. If your not a registered
user I'll read your replies, but don't expect me to take you serious.
On the other hand if you are a registered user I want to hear from you
and I'll make an honest effort towards whatever is required.

I'd like to Thank
-----------------
Nick Smith for urging me to finish the program and making me aware of the
fate of GFA Raytrace.
Trio Engineering for releasing the Spectrum 512 load/display modules and
the documention needed to create such images.
I'd like to thank GFA, but I cannot.
